I’m at FOSDEM 2025

I’m at FOSDEM 20205, and having a url here is easier for sharing on various social networks than making one thread per network.

My tips, for someone who has gone to a few now.

Make a short list of sessions to go to:

Here is a link of all the sessions that caught my eye.

It shows every event, with the room, and time. It’s probably the easiest way to bump into me: link to bookmarked events on Sojourner.

If you follow the link, you’ll see that some of the sessions happen at the same time. This is because rooms fill up, and it’s good to have a plan B.

You can make your own lists of bookmarks, and this sojourner works as a a Progressive Web App, so you can install it on your phone to always havea your list available. It’s a really nice piece of software open source software, and you can see how it was built on by checking out the repo Github.

Use the map – nav.fosdem.org

FOSDEM is one of the few conferences that has its own map app!

Follow the link to https://nav.fosdem.org, and you’ll find a interactive map, that does neat-o rout planning to help you get from one sessino to another.

Bring a mask

You don’t need to care about COVID to want to avoid getting the dreaded FOSDEM flu. Some rooms have really crap ventilation, and lots of people inside. At the very least, having a mask with you is worth it when you’re stuck in the same room for extended periods of time.

Find a back channel to use for coordination.

I use Signal.

I try to get along with Matrix, but every time I’ve tried to invest the time in learning to use it, I’ve never had enough reasons to keep using it, so I forget everything I’ve learned.

Anyway, if you want my Signal link for personal mesages, send me a private mention/message on Mastodon, or Bluesky, or LinkedIn too these days, I guess.

If sounds like it might interest you, consider coming to my talk on Sunday.

I’m doing a talk on Sunday at 11am, in the Inclusive Web Devroom, called How do we work out the environmental savings from accessibility?

You can see the room on that nifty FOSDEM map too. Here’s the link to the room for routing your way there.
