Why some people in Virginia get miffed about datacentres

Every year, there is an absolutely stellar deck from Nat Bullard, the former chief content officer of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, about climate, and this year, one of the slides caught my eye enough to share here – slide 169, which I’ve added below.

We’ve heard stories about datacentres using around 20% of all the energy in the country in Ireland – but this is the first time I’ve seen a comparable figure shared for the USA.

Virginia has an even greater share of power used, AND it’s massive in absoslute terms too.

From what I can tell, the costs of deploying this power are not evenly shared either – if you see local residents groups campaigning about the spread of datacentres, this is useful context.

You can see the full deck on Nat Bullard’s site.
